Mental Health Awareness month

This month is Mental Health Awareness month at my daughter’s school. They sent home a flyer discussing the different mental health issues plaguing our teens today and it got me thinking. If we were taught to take our mental health seriously and to give ourselves some grace to take a mental health break once in awhile, would we have all of this issues we do today? I am not talking about chemical imbalances, because you cannot combat that with a break, but for those of us beyond stressed out being able to create a way to reset. Taking a mental health break is essential for maintaining overall well-being and preventing burnout. In today's fast-paced world, our minds are constantly bombarded with stressors, deadlines, and responsibilities. Recognizing the importance of stepping back and prioritizing mental health can lead to improved mood, increased productivity, and better physical health.

Why Is It Important to Take a Mental Health Break?

1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Continuous work without breaks can elevate stress levels. A mental health break allows you to reset and calm your mind. While ideally, this would be a weekend on a beach or in the mountains with no responsibilities, but that isn’t always feasible. Your reset make be sitting in your car 10 minutes after work or grabbing a mid afternoon pick me up and resting your eyes. Practice Mindfulness or Meditation by spending a few minutes focusing on your breath or engaging in meditation apps. Whatever it is, getting in the routine of making a reset a priority will prove to be beneficial.

2. Boosts Productivity: Short breaks can improve focus and efficiency when you return to your tasks. This is something that you will need to remind yourself in the beginning…by taking a break, you will actually help your mental productivity. Take a walk outside, get fresh air and change your environment which is both beneficial for your mental and physical health.

3. Prevents Burnout: Regular mental rest helps avoid emotional exhaustion and feelings of overwhelm. I don’t know about you, but I suffer from horrible insomnia, even with sleeping additives. When I get even less sleep than my normal broken up 4 hours, I am exhausted in every which way. My temper is shorter, I am seeking an unhealthy amount of caffeine, and my brain is like a hamster wheel on crack. Engage in a relaxing hobby such as reading, listening to music, drawing, or do anything that brings you joy and relaxation.

4. Enhances Creativity and Problem-Solving: Giving your mind a rest can lead to fresh ideas and perspectives. Have you been working on a special project and hitting a wall…take a reset and step away for 15 minutes, an hour, or even a few days. You will be surprised with how easily ideas will begin to flow once you have given your brain a break. One way to do this is to disconnect from screens…I know, torture; but, you will be surprised by turning off your devices helps to prevent digital overload and mental fatigue.

5. Supports Physical Health: Chronic stress is linked to health issues like high blood pressure and weakened immune function. I have fibromyalgia and the more I push myself without a break the worse my symptoms become. Deep breathing exercises help to calm your nervous system and reduce anxiety. Gentle stretching or yoga can release tension and improve circulation.

Prioritizing mental health by taking regular breaks is not a sign of weakness but a vital component of self-care. Incorporate these small but meaningful activities into your routine to maintain mental clarity, emotional stability, and overall health. By regularly taking this mental health breaks will not only help you but also set the example for your children to prioritize their own mental health.
